Motivation:  Inspire Yourself to Hit the Pavement or Gym

Each of us must learn what motivates us to get out there and put in a good workout. Decide or realize what will inspire you to work towards and accomplish your goals. If dragging yourself to the park, gym, or fitness center is a miserable experience, you'll find excuses to give up. Make it fun! Reward yourself for small achievements. Listen to upbeat music. Hang an inspirational poster in your bedroom. Do what it takes to look forward to fitness activities!

  • Find training partners: Walking, jogging, weight-lifting, and most activities are more fun when with buddies.
  • You can do it! Post inspirational quotes or messages to yourself on the referigerator.
  • Motivational posters: Keep a mental picture of your goal by seeing it all the time on your wall!
  • Books and movies: Let yourself get excited when reading or seeing a story about a sports figure you wish to emulate. Think about it while training.
  • Music can carry you: Crank up the tunes to put you in a good frame of mind while dressing or stretching. Wear your iPod if it makes the laps go by more quickly. (unless you're with friends)
  • Cross-train: Don't get bored by following the same routine. Find a related sport to keep things fresh.
  • Meditate, or pray before, during, or after your workout, especially if you're alone. Thank the Creator for what you have and ask for help in making your body stronger.
  • Reward yourself: Plan ahead to give yourself a gift upon completing a certain number of workouts, or losing a certain amount of weight.
